Cedar hedge trimming and training

When trimming a cedar hedge

The cedar hedge is a great way to create an area of privacy with your neighbours and it costs much less than installing a fence. However, the cedar hedge needs to be trimmed annually. Entrust your work to Emondage Sherbrooke and you will be sure to have the most beautiful hedge in the entire neighbourhood!

The cedar hedge should be trimmed only when the new growth has emerged. The cedar pruning period runs from about July 1 to September 15. Avoid pruning during a heat wave or on an excessively hot day.

In order to have a healthy and well-furnished cedar hedge, it is strongly recommended to prune the cedars once a year. Since the pruning period is relatively short, we recommend that you make an appointment in advance. If you wish, we can schedule a fixed date for your annual maintenance with you. This way, you can be sure that the pruning will be done at the right time.

How to prune well

If your cedars are young and have not yet reached the desired height, our team will perform the pruning only on the sides. Once the desired height is reached, the hedge will also have to be trimmed on top.

Please note that it is recommended to prune only one third of the new growth. For a more severe cut, we can remove up to half of the new shoot. Beyond that, growth will be stunted.

Why cut the cedars

The main reason for pruning cedars is to control their growth. Annual pruning also helps to keep the hedge healthy. Another important advantage of annual pruning is to have a well-stocked hedge. Formation size

What is training size? Training pruning is the process of giving structure to a tree from an early age in order to achieve a predetermined objective.

It is desirable to perform formation pruning of a tree from a young age for several reasons. First of all, it is easier to correct structural defects on a young tree than on a tree that is several years old. It is also important to know that the larger the diameter of the branches that are cut, the longer it will take for the tree to heal. A longer healing time may lead to complications that could have been avoided if training pruning had been done at a younger age.

Before performing the training cut, our staff will speak with you to fully understand your needs.

When pruning fruit trees, the goal is usually to increase the productivity of the tree. Our team has a thorough knowledge of the fruit tree species we have in Quebec. They will therefore adapt the pruning according to the variety of the tree and its age.

Many of the people who call upon our services to perform training pruning have as their primary objective to have a tree that will provide shade and space to put a table at its foot. Our qualified employees will then prune the tree to meet your needs.
