Felling certificat Sherbrooke

Tree cutting permit, Sherbrooke

Trees are precious beings that provide many services to humans. Therefore, we cannot cut them down as we wish. Probably every municipality has a tree cutting bylaw.

In Sherbrooke, your main reference is the City of Sherbrooke's Zoning and Subdivision By-law number 1200.

This page outlines some considerations regarding tree cutting. However, it is not exhaustive. In addition, to avoid any misinterpretation and to access up-to-date information, you must refer to the City directly and to the official by-laws.

Do not cut down trees in the public right-of-way. The City of Sherbrooke is responsible. Contact them if necessary.

The term "felling" includes the following actions: cutting, pruning of more than 50% of the crown or roots, injection of noxious products, incisions in the bark, backfilling over the roots of a thickness greater than 10 cm (unless done in accordance with the methods recognized in Quebec for tree preservation).

The felling of trees requires a permit or certificate. The fee for this is $25, except in several situations mentioned in Bylaw 1202 on permits and certificates, which is available on the City of Sherbrooke's website.

There is a PDF application form for a permit or certificate of authorization that can be downloaded online. One of them is specifically for tree cutting and includes a specific data sheet to be filled out. This form allows you to indicate the number of trees involved, your reasons for cutting down, the type of area and the location where the cutting will take place. In addition, this form specifies the documents to be attached to your application, including photos and a site plan where you will locate the trees to be cut down. In some cases, you will have to replace the felled tree and some species are prohibited.

Felling in violation of the zoning by-law is subject to fines.

Acceptable reasons for cutting down a tree

Felling is permitted where a tree is diseased (including an infested ash tree or an ash tree in an outbreak area), dead or dangerous to human safety or because it is a nuisance or damaging to other trees or public or private property.

It is also necessary to prepare a site for construction or works that are subject to a permit, or because it is necessary to clear space for authorized construction, works or works, or for trees that interfere with infrastructure.

In particular, the felling of trees on large properties or in agricultural or rural areas or on a slope is subject to special conditions.

In certain cases, the felled trees must be replaced if the minimum number of trees required is no longer respected according to the size of the lot.
